"...an up-and-coming writer that's doing it right."

That's how Jason Rodriguez, editor of Postcards: True Stories That Never Happened, recently characterized me.

I like to think he got it right, because I love writing comic books. There's nothing I enjoy more than working with a talented artist to bring a story to life.

So far, I've had the pleasure of crafting stories with fantastic artists such as Juan Romera, Renzo Podesta, Noel Tuazon (of the Harvey-nominated Elk's Run), and Marvin Mann (of the also-Harvey-nominated The Lone and Level Sands).

If you're an artist who is as passionate about telling stories as I am, I'd love to talk to you. The stories I write are generally real-world, character-driven drama – except when they’re zany retro comedy or high-concept summer blockbuster or creepy horror or something else that tickles my creative fancy! Heck, I’ve even got a couple of superhero stories in me, given the right artist.

I've had stories published this year in 803 Studios' Sequential Suicide anthology and Frameworks: A Study in Sequential Art. This fall, I'll have not one but two stories published in the Eagle, Eisner, and Harvey Award-nominated anthology, Negative Burn.

Next year, I'm on tap to have stories published in a major anthology by Random House/Villard and an anthology titled Dear Santa, Let Me Explain... that James W. Powell, assistant editor of Postcards, is putting together.

So, that's the August 2007 version of "Who is Elton Pruitt?" Thanks for stopping by, and for more, visit:

I got a lot of grief from the Postcards crew I was hanging with in San Diego for sporting a Cardinals cap night and day.

What they didn't realize is that, for me, it's a family thing. My dad raised me to be a Cards fan and that's how I'm raising my son.

Here's a pic I'm really proud of -- got my dad his first-ever authentic, on-field Cards cap for Father's Day this year. My son, of course, has been outfitted in Cards gear since practically the day he was born. He's already on his second cap!

There were maybe 3 people the entire con who gave me thumbs up on the cap. One of them was this guy, DJ Lance Rock from Nick Jr's upcoming show, Yo Gabba Gabba!

So, that was pretty cool!

I needed to write a little profile for my new ComicSpace site, and this is what I came up with. I liked it, because it's short and to the point, so I decided to make it my new, official, Unified For All Sites Across Space And Time Bio. And here it is:

I love writing comic books.

It's about the most exhilirating, rewarding thing in the world for me.

My first publication will be in Sequential Suicide, to be published in 2007 by 803 Studios.

At the moment, I'm working on a self-published anthology to showcase my writing, as well as a couple of projects of larger scope.

Every Thursday, I write a column for Scryptic Studios called Running Up That Hill, in which I strive to share some of the experience, insight, and gut-wrenching fear of failure I've gained during my quest to become

Elton Pruitt,
Successful Comic Book Writer
.

When, at the age of eight, Elton Pruitt authorized his mom to sell all of his comics at a garage sale, he thought he had outgrown them. Sadly, these included numerous issues of Neal Adams’ now-legendary run on Batman and Detective Comics.

Years later, Elton regained his senses and rediscovered his love of comic books. Around this time he also discovered a passionate dislike for Southern rock – Lynyrd Skynyrd, 38 Special, you name it – and proudly attested to its worthlessness throughout the halls of his high school in Searcy, Arkansas.

So it seems only fitting that his first published comic book story1 would revolve around an apocryphal Lynyrd Skynyrd song.

Prior to his work in comic books, Elton worked as a copywriter for a small ad agency in Little Rock, where his pitch to Roller Funeral Homes of Arkansas (“We put the fun in funeral”) never quite caught on. His work for Five Miles Out writing the screenplay for their Immercenary video game was better received and led him into the fabled land of The Internet, where he has spent the last ten years programming custom web applications for Aristotle Inc.

Today – at the exact moment you are reading this, in all likelihood – Elton is hard at work on his next comic book project, a little something he likes to call Descartes the Zombie. Watch for it – and check out EltonPruitt.com2 for more information on Elton and his ongoing quest to become the 22nd century’s second greatest living comic book writer (after Drew Melbourne, of course).

1Okay, okay, it hasn't technically been published yet -- but I've got a good feeling about its chances.

2"But I'm already on EltonPruitt.com, so why are you telling me to check it out?", you may be asking yourself about now. If you are, all I can tell you is, the answer involves either (a) quantum physics, dark matter, and the black hole at the center of our galaxy, or (b) the fact that Platinum Studios asked me for a bio to go with my submission for their romance anthology comic, and I just pasted it in here with little, if any, edits. Unless you count the footnotes.
